Scholarships, fellowships, sabbaticals, and study awards
A range of study awards, scholarships, fellowships, and sabbaticals which provide release from schools are available for teachers and principals. These encourage professionals to be involved in pursuing their interests, furthering their knowledge, and contributing to understandings of effective practice in learning and teaching.
Information and calls for applications on scholarships, fellowships, sabbaticals, and study awards usually becomes available in the beginning of the year and is publicised on websites and in the New Zealand Education Gazette.
New Zealand Diploma in Specialist Subjects (Secondary Teacher) Division II
The New Zealand Diploma in Specialist Subjects (Secondary Teacher) Division II gives a group of teachers a targeted opportunity to upgrade their qualifications for salary group G3+. The Ministry of Education pays the fees of teachers enrolled in the New Zealand Diploma in Specialist Subjects (Secondary Teacher) Division II, except where additional study is required to complete the diploma.
The Microsoft NZ Partners in Learning Innovative Teachers Awards 2008
This award provides support for four teachers to attend the Microsoft ASIA Pacific Regional conference June 2009 in Malaysia and an opportunity for New Zealand’s most innovative teacher to attend the Microsoft world conference. Submissions can be made on the website www.innovativeteachers.co.nz. The closing date is Monday August 25 2008.

Study awards in Māori and Pasifika education research
The aim of these awards is to assist emerging education researchers to complete research-based postgraduate study in Māori and Pasifika education.
Principal sabbaticals
Area school, primary and secondary principals can apply for paid sabbatical leave of ten weeks duration to engage in a balance of professional learning, reflection, and rejuvenation. Principals are expected to share their findings with their colleagues.
Secondary teacher sabbaticals
The Secondary Teachers’ Sabbatical Leave scheme provides a sustained period of time for teachers to engage in a balance of professional learning and reflection and rejuvenation. Teachers are expected to share their findings with their colleagues.
